The Ocean Margin Exchange (OMEX) project aims were to study, measure and model the physical, chemical and biological processes and fluxes happening at the ocean margin, the interface between the open ocean and the continental shelf.

The first phase of the project, OMEX I, concentrated on studying the processes happening along the northwest European shelf break.

Fieldwork was carried out between April 1993 and December 1995 and consisted of 47 research cruise legs involving ships from nine European countries. Over 95% of the 600 data sets collected during the field programme are assembled on the CDROM.

The CDROM includes data from CTD and SeaSoar profiles, XBT profiles, ADCP profiles, water and air samples, core profiles, net hauls, sediment trap samples, production experiments, benthic fauna samples and drifting buoy tracks.

The data are accompanied by an extensive Users' Guide. This covers sampling protocol documentation, the structures used to store the data and information on the interface software provided (BODC's Database Explorer and Underway Explorer).

The CDROM was published in 1997.

The individual data sets are stored in our databank and subsets are available on request. Contact the BODC Enquiries Officer for further information.
