Objectives and Narrative JR15003 is a combined logistic and science cruise, including base/field camp operations at South Powell Island, Signy, and Coronation Island in the South Orkneys and at Rothera Research Station. The science comprised three primary projects (SMEs 804, 809, and 904) and two opportunistic add-on projects. During the southbound leg of the cruise we deployed two Slocum gliders off the western Antarctic Peninsula (one had to be recovered following a leak and the other is to be recovered from Rothera later in the season) and conducted CTD profiles and sediment cores at three sites on the western Antarctic Peninsula continental shelf. On the northbound leg in Drake Passage we conducted CTD profiles at 28 sites; recovered and redeployed bottom landers equipped with bottom pressure recorders and temperature and salinity sensors at one site on the southern continental slope and one on the northern slope; and deployed 4 biogeochem-equipped autonomous profiling floats. Water samples from the CTD casts were analysed for salinity (all stations) and oxygen (some stations), and samples were taken at some stations for subsequent onshore analysis of nutrients, neodymium, pH/alkalinity, and HPLC/POC. Throughout the cruise as ice and weather conditions permitted we made continuous underway measurements of meteorological variables, surface temperature and salinity, upper ocean currents, and bathymetry, along with intermittent sampling of surface water for salinity calibration (at sea) and neodymium (ashore). The cruise itinerary also allowed for servicing of the tide gauges at Stanley, Signy, Rothera, and Vernadsky.
