Objectives and Narrative |
AMT12 is the first in the new series of Atlantic Meridional Transect cruises, funded as a NERC consortium project and is building on the successes and format developed by Plymouth Marine Laboratory in pioneering the first eleven of these types of cruises.
The track for this first cruise is to transect through both the North and South Atlantic gyre systems, with the aim of understanding the physical and chemical structures that make up these ocean systems and how they interact with the atmosphere. The cruise also undertook recovery of three bottom pressure recorders deployed in the Argentinian Basin in order to correct models of the data from the gravity satellites that comprise the GRACE experiment. This was lead by G Hargreaves, POL (JR88). GRACE is a USA/German experiment consisting of two polar orbiting satellites connected by a microwave link. An opportunistic swath bathmetry survey was also done for IGI en route to the UK between 13 and 14 Jun (JR102). The survey was conducted in the south west of Ireland. |
