Short name | 1009S |
Objectives and Narrative |
Objectives
1. To survey sites in connection with offshore wet renewables development within the Pentland Firth and areas adjacent to Orkney. Contingency survey work is included, undertaking the same survey work outside the Pentland Firth and Orkney. This includes sites to the west of Lewis and southwest of Islay. Procedure Scotia will depart from Aberdeen on Sunday 19 July. The nature of the work will be heavily dependant on the prevailing weather and tidal conditions encountered. The proposed survey work for the Pentland Firth and Orkney is very similar to the work undertaken in 2008. The survey work will involve the deployment of a tide gauge and a series of transects collecting swathe data. The deployment of the TV drop frame (with CTD attached), and where practical, the day grab, will be undertaken at slack water within the Pentland Firth. Similar restrictions may not apply to sites outside the Pentland Firth. Prior to each of the swathe surveys, a sound velocity profile will be recorded. Transects collecting current velocity data will also be completed using the hull mounted ADCP over 13 hour periods. A half landing will take place at Scrabster on 27 July with an exchange of scientific staff. The sites outside the Pentland Firth and Orkney will be surveyed in the same manner as above but may also include the deployment of the Agassiz trawl and TV sledge providing seabed conditions are suitable. Scotia will return to Aberdeen on 5 August to disembark staff, all equipment and samples will be removed. |
