Objectives | Tagging and biological sampling of mackerel (Scomber scombrus). Tagging of ca 20,000 fish. Biological sampling of ca 1,000 fish. The cruise is part of the effort to estimate the strength of the European mackerel stock. The fish are caught with 5-6 hand-lines, each with 6 small hooks with red plastic bait. The fish are kept in
basins with running water, and those that look ok are tagged and returned to the sea. Part of the discarded catch is used for biological samples. The tags are mainly internal stainless steel tags inserted in the belly, and some external T-tags fastened in the dorsal muscle. The fish are caught from the surface down to about 60 m. |
