PurposeResearch
ObjectivesBottom shot experiments with ocean bottom seismographs in the Norwegian Sea.
This cruise was carried out under a contract with the Admiralty Research Establishment, Portland to make and interpret measurements of seismic velocities in the top 1000m or so below the sea-bed. Six sites were to be visited in the Norwegian Sea along a line from about 62 degrees 20 minutes north, 15 degrees 40 minutes west to 64 degrees 15 minutes north, 2 degrees 20 minutes west. At each site the same sequence of experiments was planned. Bottom shots were to be deployed along a line a few kilometers long and recorded by two digital ocean-bottom seismographs (DOBS). These instruments had previously been modified under an earlier contract in order that they could record digitally the rather high frequency signals generated by such bottom shots. In addition the DOBS were to record shots fired by an array of near-surface airguns. Reflection profiles were also to be obtained to aid the interpretation of the seismic refraction profiles and disposable sonobuoys were deployed as opportunites arose.
