1. To sample water for nutrient analyses along transects between Aberdeen and Arbroath. Narrative Scientific gear and personnel joined Clupea on evening of 2 March. After setting up and securing equipment, Clupea sailed from Fraserburgh at midnight and made passage south to Aberdeen where water sampling commenced at 0430 on 3 March. Water samples were taken at 5 minute intervals within 3 miles from the coast and 10 minute intervals between 3 and 12 miles. One transit was carried out to 20 miles and water sampled at 15 minute intervals to 20 miles offshore. By 1200, after completing 4 transects and with worsening weather, it was decided to head south to Montrose Bay for possible anchorage overnight and an abatement in the weather. On arrival at Montrose Bay and with the weather no worse that it had been, water sampling recommenced at 1700. Between 1700 on 3 March and 1100 on 5 March, 32 x 12 mile transects were completed. It was not possible due to the weather conditions to transit beyond about 10 miles offshore. Samples were filtered for chlorophyll analysis at hourly intervals. Salinity samples were taken every 2 hours. Data was collected from a thermosalinograph and fluorometer, which ran continuously for the duration of the cruise. Docking in Aberdeen was completed by 1200 on 5 March. The scientific equipment and samples were unloaded and returned to the laboratory. |
