Cruise summary report

Cruise Info.
Ship name (ship code)FS Meteor (06M3)
Cruise identifierM42_4
Cruise period1998-09-26 — 1998-10-26
StatusCompleted
Port of departureLas Palmas, Spain
Port of returnViana do Castelo, Portugal
PurposeResearch
ObjectivesRelated to CANIGO programme. Aims include:
1) To exchange sediment-trap-moorings on a 29 degrees north transect
2) To take sediment cores in the research area
3) To test the deep-sea research devices in the framework of the BMBF project DOMEST. Testing includes acoustic data transmission into the deep ocean and the connection to a satellite communication network. New devices will be tested for their functioning on board and in the deep ocean.

Meteorological station
1) Weather consultation (issuing daily weather forecasts)
2) Meteorological observations and measurements
3) Determination of the net total radiation at sea

Measurements
Chemical oceanography
IsotopesQuantity: number of deployments = 2
Description: Deployment of 2 sediment trap moorings (ESTOC) on zonal transect from the shelf to the outer oligotrophic region of the Canary archipelago. Particulate material collected from the sediment traps analysed to determine carbonate and carbon isotopes of organic matter
Contamination
Trace metalsQuantity: number of deployments = 2
Description: Deployment of 2 sediment trap moorings (ESTOC) on zonal transect from the shelf to the outer oligotrophic region of the Canary archipelago. ESTOC-mooring has in situ pumps for sampling the water column for trace metals.
Biology and fisheries
Particulate organic matter (inc POC, PON)Quantity: number of deployments = 2
Description: Deployment of 2 sediment trap moorings (ESTOC) on zonal transect from the shelf to the outer oligotrophic region of the Canary archipelago. Particulate material collected from the sediment traps analysed to determine total flux, particulate flux, particulate organic carbon, particulate nitrogen, biogenic opal and lithogenic material.
Sediment trapsQuantity: number of deployments = 2
Description: Deployment of 2 sediment trap moorings (ESTOC) on zonal transect from the shelf to the outer oligotrophic region of the Canary archipelago. Each mooring contains 2/3 sediment traps (20 cup collector) the upper one at least 500m below surface. Sampling period 1 to 2 weeks.
Meteorology
Other meteorological measurementsQuantity: number of observations = 6
Description: 6-8 synoptic weather observations daily. Largely automated radiosonde soundings of the atmosphere up to about 25 km height. Processed data inserted onto GTS via satellite in frame of the international programme ASAP. Recording, processing and storage of pictures from meteorological satellites.
