PurposeResearch
ObjectivesAims

(a) determination of the variability of benthic nutrient release (NH4+, P, Fe, Si) and N2 in relation to the hydrodynamic regime, to local differences in the bottom water concentration of O2 and NO3 - as well as the organic carbon content of surface sediments
(b) investigation of the benthic microbiology driving these fluxes with particular regard to N2-fixation
(c) the investigation of mixing processes in the benthic boundary layer (BBL) and the quantification of diapycnal and advective fluxes of N2, NH4+, P, Fe, Si as well as radium isotopes across the BBL into the stratified water column and the mixed surface layer
(d) determination of the turnover of nutrients as well as of the particulate and dissolved organic matter in the water column
(e) study of O2-dependent processes of the N cycle in the water column, with particular regard to N-fixation and N loss

This will be approached by the simultaneous measurement of benthic fluxes and the current regime using different benthic landers, microstructure measurements, as well as the deployment of moorings and gliders. Further investigations in the water column are highresolution nutrient profiles during CTD water sampling rosette deployments and investigations using sediment traps.
