Objectives | GEOTRACES-China process study cruise. Three transects will be executed to cover the study area between 12-33°N and 126-155°E to obtain the full water column distribution of TEIs and to improve the understanding of sources, sinks and internal cycling of TEIs in the NPSG as part of the international GEOTRACES program. The coupling between TEIs with macronutrients and the relation of trace element cycling in the NPSG to the oceanic carbon cycle and global environmental and climatic change will be examined as well. All key elements (including Fe, Al, Ni, Zn, Cd, Cu and Mn) and isotopes (13C, 15N, 230Th, 231Pa and Nd radiogenic isotopes) defined by the GEOTRACES SSC will be sampled and analyzed during and after the cruise to fulfill the requirements of GEOTRACES Process Study. Meanwhile, the distribution of some other elements and isotopes, including REEs, 234Th, 210Pb-210Po, and Si and Ba isotopes, will be obtained. Other complementary parameters, including macronutrients, carbonate system, DOC and POC, pigments, and nitrogen fixation rate, will also be measured.
During the 50 days of the cruise, 11 clean stations, including 5 Mega stations and 6 normal clean stations, for both conventional and clean CTD sampling and 5 hydrological stations for conventional CTD sampling will be occupied to collect (trace metal clean) seawater and particle samples. 5 mega stations are designed for process studies of C, N, and TEIs coupling. Aerosol samples will be also collected along the cruise track. |
