PurposeResearch
ObjectivesCANYONS (CApe darNleY palaeOceanography from sedimeNt coreS)

Aims

1. To understand past changes in Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) production using long sediment cores from the continental slope over multiple warm periods during the Pleistocene
2. Develop an improved bathymetry model to support oceanographic modelling of AABW pathways.

As part of this project the Australian GEOTRACES team aims to understand the processes controlling the distribution of dissolved trace metals in Antarctic waters and to develop new geochemical proxies for past ice sheet and ocean change. The cruise will be a combined water column and sediment core study, including analysis of sediment multi-cores and pore waters. The combination of multi-cores and water column samples provides an opportunity to test the fidelity of proxies, which can then be applied directly to sediment cores collected in the region to address the paleoceanographic aims of CANYONS.
