Objectives | OMEX II - leg 1
Benthic Biology of the Iberian Upwelling Margin. This cruise is a pilot study with the primary aim to make an extensive survey of the sea floor topography and the benthos prior to any detailed local sampling and in-situ measurements in later cruises. Objectives: 1. To investigate the existence of depocentres of labile organics on the Iberian margin, measure their importance in terms of carbon assimilation (by in-situ SCOC and growth measurements), and attempt to trace the sources fuelling them (phytopigment analyses). 2. To investigate the coupling between the responses of benthic communities and the fluxes of carbon in the OMEX area. 3. Use video and Agassiz trawl surveys help to plan benthic sampling. Narrative: Sampling planned along 3 transects and compare data with those of Omex-I (only 2 transects with sediment sampling). A seismic survey was made of each transect with a 3.5Kc echosounder to locate sampling locations. A video-Agassiz trawl was used to map the megafauna and the small-scale topography of the sea-floor. At each trawling station a CTD profile of the water column was made and samples of near-bottom water were taken. Sediment samples were colllected with a box- or multi-corer for the analysis of: macrofauna, meiofauna, mesofauna, phytopigments, nucleic acids, C/N and porosity. Phytopigments in the near-bottom water and surface sediment samples used as biomarkers for quality and origin of the phytodetritus. Preliminary measurements of SCOC in shipboard incubated cores of 30cm diameter were made. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
