ObjectivesObjectives:
1. To complete biological and geochemical surveys of surficial sediments at sites (140 to 1850m) spanning the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) on the Pakistan margin of the Arabian Sea during an intermonsoon (low productivity) period.
2. To conduct in situ (via benthic lander) and shipboard (in controlled T laboratory) investigations of sedimentary processes and C cycling by benthic communities.
Narrative:
Due to the Iraq conflict, a last-minute change of port, from Muscat, Oman to Mahe, Seychelles was made. Despite this, and resulting loss of cruise time (to CD145 and CD146), all primary cruise objectives were met. Once in the work area, on the Pakistan margin off the Indus River, work was carried out at 5 primary sites (140, 300, 950, 1200 and 1850m) spanning the OMZ (ca. 200-1000m), continuing survey work commenced on CD145 and completing ambitious programme of in situ and shipboard incubation studies. Seven to eight days of benthic lander deployments were carried out at each of the 5 sites, including microelectrode porewater profiling, benthic flux determinations (dissolved gases, nutrients, trace metals, and organic matter), benthic boundary layer water sampling, and tracer incubation studies (13C-labeled algae and fluorescent particles). Although problems were encountered with the lander on several occasions (hydraulic shovel, burnwires etc) the majority of deployments were successful. Parallel studies were also conducted in whole-core incubations carried out on board in a controlled temperature laboratory. New 'oxystat' equipment for maintaining ambient oxygen concentrations were used successfully in both the in situ and shipboard incubations. Coring was also carried out every ca 50 m between 700 and 1200m, which will permit a uniquely detailed assessment of biological and geochemical changes across an OMZ boundary.
