Port of departureLas Palmas, Spain
Port of returnViana do Castelo, Portugal
PurposeResearch
ObjectivesCANGO project aims:
1) To better understand the processes of physical and bio-geochemical fluxes in the eastern subtropical gyre of the North Atlantic
2) Investigation of the effects of seasonal upwelling
3) Investigation of input of Sahara dust into the ocean
4) Investigation of exchange processes between the Atlantic and Mediterranean

Additional aims:
1)The exchange of longterm mooring carrying current meters and particle traps in the eastern boundary current system and at the European time series station ESTOC
2) The recovery of current meters in the Mediterranean outflow region off Portugal
3) A closed box north of the Canary Islands sampled for hydrographic, bio-geochemical and bio-optical variables
4) Vertical profiles of dissolved organic carbon taken
5) Fish levels from the Antarctic Intermediate and Mediterranean water mass levels studied
6) Contribute to all components of ESTOC
7) Meteorological station - weather consultation (issuing daily weather forecasts), meteorological observations and measurements, and determination of the net total radiation at sea. Global solar radiation and atmospheric radiation, reflected solar radiation and terrestrial surface radiation computed using numerical models measured. Direct solar radiation, sunshine duration and UV-B global radiation also measured.

Docked at Las Palmas on the 25/06/98 for 1 day to unload and load equipment and exchange personnel
