Ship name (ship code)RRS James Clark Ross (74JC)
Cruise identifierJR20070206 (JR158)
Cruise period2007-02-06 — 2007-02-19
StatusCompleted
Port of departureRothera, Antarctica
Port of returnMontevideo, Uruguay
PurposeResearch
ObjectivesThe purpose of the cruise was to map the positions of the Antarctic Coastal Current and the Antarctic Slope Front near the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. This was principally carried out through the deployment of 40 surface drifters along a transect crossing the continental shelf and slope. Hydrographic data was also collected along this transect.

Deployment of drifters began in earnest on the 9th of February, following a strong storm, and continued during the offshore leg for approximately 24 hours. Hydrographic data was obtained on the return leg between the 10th and 12th of February. A short leg along part of the transect was completed to obtain shipboard ADCP data.

Measurements
Physical oceanography
Surface measurements underway (T,S)Quantity: activity duration in days = 12
Description: Temperature, salinity, fluorescence collected throughout the cruise at a depth of approximately 10m.
Water bottle stationsQuantity: number of samples = 155
Description: Approximately 8 bottle samples per CTD profile. Salinities were calibrated using IAPSO standard seawater (batch 144).
CTD stationsQuantity: number of stations = 20
Description: Data collected with Sea-Bird 911 plus CTD system. Full depth profiles collected temperature, conductivity (salinity), dissolved oxygen, beam transmission, fluorescence. After processing, data is good to 2dB.
Current profiler (eg ADCP)Quantity: activity duration in days = 12
Description: 75kHz RD Instruments Ocean Surveyor (OS75) shipboard ADCP. Data valid to a least 700m depth. Data collected in 16m bins, processed profiles every 10 minutes.
Current profiler (eg ADCP)Quantity: number of profiles = 20
Description: 20 lowered Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers from a downward-looking 300kHz RDI Workhorse mounted on the CTD frame. Bottom-tracking was enabled. Data processing done with Lamont-Doherty software.
Chemical oceanography
OxygenQuantity: activity duration in days = 11
Description: Underway dissolved oxygen measured by Aanderaa optode. 10s resolution (over 90000 individual readings).
OxygenQuantity: number of samples = 155
Description: Samples collected for oxygen isotope analysis.
OxygenQuantity: number of samples = 93
Description: Dissolved oxygen measured using whole-bottle Winklet titration. Samples collected during CTD casts. Measurements made to calibrate CTD oxygen sensor and underway oxygen measurements.
Biology and fisheries
Acoustic reflection on marine organisms.Quantity: activity duration in days = 12
Description: Simrad EK60 fishery echosounder. The EK60 was turned off at times to limit interference with shipboard ADCP and bottom sounder EA600.
