PurposeResearch
Objectives1. To quantitatively assess the import / export routes of Circumpolar Deep Water and Antarctic Bottom Water to / from the Weddell gyre.
2. To obtain an optimal, self-consistent estimate of the rates of ventilation and Antarctic Bottom Water formation in, and Antarctic Bottom Water export from, the Weddell gyre.
3. To quantify the nutrient and carbon cycles of the Weddell gyre.
4. To determine the rate of sequestration of anthropogenic carbon into the deep Weddell gyre.
5. To investigate the extent to which ventilation in, and Antarctic Bottom Water export from, the Weddell gyre have varied on interannual to decadal time scales.
6. To feed the newly gained quantitative understanding of exchanges across the Weddell gyre's rim into the design of the emerging Southern Ocean Observing System during the IPY.

CTD casts and water samples were collecting during the ANDREX cruise in the northern part of the Weddell Sea. Due to a medical evacuation, the cruise was aborted after station 27 to head to Port Stanley, Falkland Islands.
