PurposeResearch
ObjectivesObjective:
Commencement of the sampling programme in the Cormorant 1:250 000 sheet (61-62 degrees North, 2-0 degrees East) area. In the event of weather 'down' time, standby work areas were planned in the Shetland 1:250 000 sheet (60° - 61° N, 2° - 0° W) area.

Vibrocore (6m) sampling was the prime mode of operation for up to 16 hours per day. Sites decided by area geologist. At night, or during 'down' time, gravity coring (sediment or rock coring modes) stations were planned. Shipek grab samples were required at all stations. Sites decided after a review of each day's progress and results. MS47 sonar was used. 138 sample stations were occupied with 114 in the Comorant sheet area (111 SW and 3 SE), 17 in the Shetland area and 7 on Halibut bank. Samples were taken at each station by either the vibrocorer, gravity corer or Shipek grab. The samples were geologically logged and suitable cores were measured for shear and unconfined compressive strength. Eh and pH determinations were made on the grab samples and suitable cores. Sub-samples were taken from grabs for paleontological and geochemical examination and live macro-fauna encountered were preserved of Formalin.

Results:
Comorant: 114 stations were occupied with 33 vibrocores, 72 gravity cores and 58 Shipek grabs.
Shetland: 17 stations were occupied with 4 vibrocores, 5 gravity cores and 16 Shipek grabs.
Halibut Bank: 7 stations occupied with 3 gravity cores and 7 Shipek grabs.
