Short name | JR19960720 (JR14) |
Objectives and Narrative |
report
1) Complete a hydrographic and geochemical survey sufficient to locate the position of the gyre and describe it fully in terms of hydrography, carbon, oxygen, nutrients, CFC tracers and background SF6. 2) Simultaneously with the survey, deploy sound-source moorings in a "box" pattern surrounding the main Greenland Sea Gyre. 3) Following the survey and moorings, release the tracer and floats over a period of one and a half weeks by a series of short tows near the centre of the gyre. All of these objectives were achieved. On the first leg, 27 full-depth hydrographic-plus chemistry stations were done in a pattern around the gyre to form the survey, and 7 sound-source moorings were deployed (see fig. 2.1). On the second leg, 320kg of the tracer SF6 was released in a series of streaks aorund the nominal centre of the gyre and (see fig. 3.1, 3.2). Also on this leg, floats were deployed around the same area and a further mooring was set. |
