SIMORC Total Angola MANGO CTD Data Narrative
Narrative
Four different CTD instruments (Ocean Seven 316 multi-parameter probe, Idronaut, Horiba U-22 multi-parameter probe or SBE19+) were deployed offshore Angola as part of Environmental Baseline Surveys.
Data Quality Information
The following data quality checks were applied to temperature, salinity, turbidity, redox potential, oxygen concentration and oxygen saturation, pH and suspended sediment measurements:
- Changes too sudden to be physically feasible (spikes) were flagged suspect.
- Changes too large to be physically feasible (such as increases to oxygen saturations in excess of 150%) were flagged suspect.
A regular occurrence of inconsistent data was the first datacycle of many profiles; showing a particularly low temperature and a salinity of near zero. This was assumed to represent cases where the instrument was partially out of the water and was flagged suspect.
Series reference 1095326 oxygen saturation data should be discarded as meaningless as there was no actual oxygen concentration data measured to support the calculation of percentage saturation.
pH data from series reference 1095271 shows a significantly differently shaped profile and should be treated with caution.
Concentration of suspended sediment was null (not measured) for all series and was therefore deleted.
Redox potential profiles from series reference 1095105 and 1095098 were very similar, as were profiles from series references 1095074 and 1095086. The two sets of profiles were situated far apart from each other on the redox scale. 1095105 and 1095098 were shifted to the left with lower redox potential values than the other set.
Data Access Policy
SIMORC data access conditions
The data collated and held at BODC on behalf of the SIMORC project are restricted. However, the data will be available to download from the Official SIMORC Website, as part of the project protocol. The data set will initially include data from the oil companies TOTAL, Shell and BP.
Narrative Documents
Sea-Bird SBE 19 and SBE 19plus SEACAT Profiler CTDs
The SBE 19 SEACAT Profiler is a self-contained, battery powered, pumped CTD system designed to measure conductivity, temperature, and pressure in marine or fresh water environments to depths of 10,500 meters. It was replaced by the SBE 19plus model in 2001. An updated version of this instrument is the SBE 19plus V2, which incorporates an electronics upgrade and additional features, with six differentially amplified A/D input channels, one RS-232 data input channel, and 64 MB FLASH memory.
The standard CTD unit comes with a plastic housing (rated to 600 m), although this can be replaced by titanium housing for depths up to 7000 m. It is typically used for CTD profiling although a conversion kit is available for mooring deployments. The CTD can also be attached to an SBE 36 CTD Deck Unit and Power/Data Interface Module (PDIM) for real-time operation on single-core armored cable up to 10,000 m.

BODC Processing
Data were received by BODC in Comma Separated Variable files. They were reformatted to QXF format using BODC transfer function 422. The following table shows how the variables within the files were mapped to the appropriate BODC parameter codes:

Conductivity | milliSiemens/centimetre | Conductivity | CNDCST01 | Siemens/metre | /10.0 |
TEMP | degrees Celsius | Sea temperature | TEMPST01 | degrees Celsius | |

Following transfer to QXF, the data were screened using BODC's in-house visualisation software, EDSERPLO.
General Data Screening carried out by BODC
BODC screen both the series header qualifying information and the parameter values in the data cycles themselves.
Header information is inspected for:
- Irregularities such as unfeasible values
- Inconsistencies between related information, for example:
- Times for instrument deployment and for start/end of data series
- Length of record and the number of data cycles/cycle interval
- Parameters expected and the parameters actually present in the data cycles
- Originator's comments on meter/mooring performance and data quality
Documents are written by BODC highlighting irregularities which cannot be resolved.
Data cycles are inspected using time or depth series plots of all parameters. Currents are additionally inspected using vector scatter plots and time series plots of North and East velocity components. These presentations undergo intrinsic and extrinsic screening to detect infeasible values within the data cycles themselves and inconsistencies as seen when comparing characteristics of adjacent data sets displaced with respect to depth, position or time. Values suspected of being of non-oceanographic origin may be tagged with the BODC flag denoting suspect value; the data values will not be altered.
The following types of irregularity, each relying on visual detection in the plot, are amongst those which may be flagged as suspect:
- Spurious data at the start or end of the record.
- Obvious spikes occurring in periods free from meteorological disturbance.
- A sequence of constant values in consecutive data cycles.
If a large percentage of the data is affected by irregularities then a Problem Report will be written rather than flagging the individual suspect values. Problem Reports are also used to highlight irregularities seen in the graphical data presentations.
Inconsistencies between the characteristics of the data set and those of its neighbours are sought and, where necessary, documented. This covers inconsistencies such as the following:
- Maximum and minimum values of parameters (spikes excluded).
- The occurrence of meteorological events.
This intrinsic and extrinsic screening of the parameter values seeks to confirm the qualifying information and the source laboratory's comments on the series. In screening and collating information, every care is taken to ensure that errors of BODC making are not introduced.
Project Information

SIMORC: Total Angola, Block 17 Girassol, Fixed Station Document
This site is part of the Total facility.
The moorings deployed lie within a box bounded by co-ordinates 7.7° S, 11.65° E at the southwest corner and 7.67° S, 11.6825° E at the northeast corner.
The GIRASSOL platform, Block 17, offshore Angola consists of a Floating Production, Storage and Offloading vessel (FPSO) and a Single Buoy Mooring (SBM).
Various deployments were taken from or near this station over a number of years.
Between September 1997 and October 1998
A current meter mooring occupied this site. In addition to time series data obtained from the moored instruments, CTD profiles were conducted following the deployment and prior to the recovery of the mooring to be used for calibration purposes.
