PurposeResearch
ObjectivesThe principle objective of D340 Leg A was to undertake the sampling of the Extended Ellett Line, an annual section of CTD and bio-chemical monitoring stations that runs from Iceland to Rockall and on to Ardnamurchan Point in Scotland. The Extended Ellett line is funded under Theme 10 of NERC's Oceans2025.

Secondary objectives included:

i) recovery of four NOCS moorings, deployed during 2007, and the turnaround of the ADCP mooring on the Wyville Thomson Ridge (also Theme 10 of Oceans2025).
ii) trace metal and associated biogeochemical observations with a view to researching the limiting role of iron in biological production in the Iceland Basin.
iii) isolating marine bacteria and determining microbial diversity.
