Cruise Inventory Information
Long name | RRS James Cook (740H) cruise JC211 |

Short name | JC211 |
Objectives and Narrative |
This cruise was formed from four separate tasks / SMEs:
- the Polar Ocean Ecosystems Time Series (POETS), aiming to monitor the ecosystem around South Georgia, consisting of acoustic transects, turnaround of two moorings (one deep, one shallow), CTD and bongo net casts on the transects and at each mooring site, and calibration of the scientific echo sounders - deployment of two gliders, accompanied by CTD casts near iceberg A-68A, southeast of South Georgia - the A23 oceanographic transect from the shelf break southeast of South Georgia, south through the eastern Scotia Sea, and into the northern Weddell Sea - the SR1b oceanographic transect from Elephant Island off the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula to Burdwood Bank south of the Falkland Islands After recovering mooring P3, acoustic transects in the Western Core Box, north of South Georgia, were performed during the day, with CTD and bongo casts overnight. Mooring WCB was also recovered and redeployed before an acoustic calibration was performed in Stromness Harbour, and P3 was redeployed. Additional CTD casts were performed around iceberg A-68A and the smaller icebergs that had calved from it. Two gliders were also deployed, one south of the iceberg and one to the north. A CTD transect onto the shelf SE of South Georgia was also done to see the effect of the wake of iceberg A-68H, which had passed through the area earlier. The A23 repeat CTD section was re-occupied from South Georgia to the south. Because of poor weather and lack of time, the southernmost planned station was not occupied; there was also a weather delay of almost 24 hours on 22-23 Feb. Two Argo floats were deployed on this transect. The SR1b repeat section was re-occupied from south to north. After the initial cast, deteriorating weather caused the ship to seek shelter south of Elephant Island, where an acoustic transect to obtain bottom track calibration points for the ADCPs was performed. Subsequently the weather improved, allowing the CTD casts to continue, and no further weather delays were encountered. Two Argo floats were deployed on this transect. Since some additional time remained before the ship could return to port, five additional CTD casts were made in the western extension of the Falkland Trough between Burdwood Bank and the Falkland Islands, before performing further acoustic transects at varying headings east of Sea Lion Island to improve the calibration of the ADCPs. |
