Physical oceanography  
CTD stations Quantity: number of stations = 27
Description: Studies of microbial ecology by flow cytometry. Quantification of the planktonic community in terms of distributon, population and size structure of specific nano- and picoplankton groups and cyanobacteria, phytoplankton activity in the mixed layer, mortality of phytoplankton due to microzooplankton grazing and the partitioning of grazing by different size classes of microzooplankton. 3 types of grazing experiment conducted during the cruise - 9 experiments in total. CTD casts sampled for phytoplankton community structure with abundances at 20 m. Samples were collected at all available depths from the shallow biogeochemistry casts.  
Optics (eg underwater light levels) Quantity: number of stations = 22
Description: Optical measurements made using the two aft telescopic cranes to take an optical profile simultaneously with measurements above surface to obtain the water leaving radiance. Satlantic light meters were profiled to a depth of 200m. Biospherics MER1010 Spectroradiometer was suspended at a height of 5 m above the sea surface to measure water leaving radiance at 12 wavelengths spanning the SeaWiFS range. A 'deck cell' measured downwelling sunlight intensity at four wavelengths in order to correct both the Spectroradiometer and the Satlantic data for changes in ambient light intensity during the measurements. Spectral data was collected from the spectroradiometer to characterize the sky colour so that the previous water leaving radiance data could be corrected for reflected skylight.  
Optics (eg underwater light levels) Quantity: number of profiles = 22
Description: Optical profiles from 21 of the 22 casts. 21 spectral reflectance plots produced from each. Water samples taken from 22 optical casts. 5 water leaving radiance spectra were taken with the MARS whist underway for subsequent comparison with similar measurements made on the Thomas G Thompson.  
Surface drifters/drifting buoys Quantity: number of experiments = 3
Description: Drift experiments were occupied for not less than 3 days. During this time the ship was allowed to drift track our free-floating sediment trap  
Chemical oceanography  
Ammonia Quantity: number of stations = 84
Description: Semi-continuous fluorescence analytical technique for ammonia. 15 GOM stations, 61 A stations, 8 AS stations. Methylamine and ammonia analysis was performed on CTD profiles from 8 A casts in the Arabian Sea, and 6 AS casts Coastal transect. 45 on-way samples along AS1-A7 transect 11 atmospheric samples. The spatial distribution of the methylamines and ammonia in the surface waters and overlying atmospheric phases of the NW Indian Ocean was characterized, and their contribution to the marine budget of reduced nitrogen was estimated. Studies to establish the magnitude and direction of their air-sea exchange fluxes and interpret the results of these studies within the context of the biogeochemical cycle of nitrogen were also carried out.  
Carbon dioxide Quantity: number of stations = 40
Description: Measurements for continuous surface partial pressure (tension) of carbon dioxide by NDIR absorption, discrete partial pressure (tension) of carbon dioxide vertical profiles by gas chromatography and discrete total carbon dioxide vertical profiles by coulometry taken. 9 GOM stations, 3 AS stations, 28 AS stations  
Nitrate Quantity: number of stations = 84
Description: Continuous segmented-flow automated colormetric analysis of seawater on nitrate. Under ogliotrophic conditions a nanomolar chemiluminescent analysis system employed. 15 GOM stations, 61 A stations, 8 AS stations.  
Nitrite Quantity: number of stations = 84
Description: Continuous segmented-flow automated colormetric analysis of seawater on nitrite. Under ogliotrophic conditions a nanomolar chemiluminescent analysis system employed. 15 GOM stations, 61 A stations, 8 AS stations.  
Other chemical oceanographic measurements Quantity: number of stations = 84
Description: Continuous segmented-flow automated colormetric analysis of seawater on urea. 15 GOM stations, 61 A stations, 8 AS stations.  
Other dissolved gases Quantity: number of stations = 15
Description: 35 vertical hydrocasts were successfully analysed, covering each of the oceanographic stations in detail. 400 individual gas analyses were made. Nitrous oxide and methane were determined in samples of ambient air form the same locations. The dissolved seawater concentrations of nitrous oxide and methane were determined simultaneously to high precision using a fully automated headspace equilibration - gas chromatographic technique. 9 GOM stations, 3 AS stations, 28 A stations  
Oxygen Quantity: number of stations = 43
Description: Oxygen concentrations were measured and AOUs calculated for all bottle depths on 7 GOM stations, 6 AS stations, and 30 A stations  
Phosphate Quantity: number of stations = 84
Description: Continuous segmented-flow automated colormetric analysis of seawater on phosphate. 15 GOM stations, 61 A stations, 8 AS stations.

Contamination  
Chlorinated hydrocarbons Quantity: number of stations = 31
Description: Duplicate samples were taken from all casts to determine precisions. Casts from which CFC samples were taken: 4 GOM stations, 1 AS stations, 26 A stations. The analytical technique used combined elements from the methods of Gammon et al. (1982), Haine (1992) and Krysell and Nightingale, (1993)  
Suspended matter Quantity: number of samples = 5
Description: Taken in the euphotic zone (upper 100 m) for suspended particle absorption using UV/Vis spectrometer over the region of 400-750 nm  
Biology and fisheries  
Dissolved organic matter (inc DOC) Quantity: number of samples = 44
Description: Dissolved organic carbon: samples analysed for DOC from the 10 and 5 m. Particle size and number - samples from 10 and 5 m were analysed using flow cytometry. 62 stations sampled for HTCO-DOC measurements. 12 GOM station casts, 6 AS station casts, 44 A station casts  
Other biological/fisheries measurement Quantity: number of stations = 19
Description: Rates of bacterivory and ammonia regeneration by nano- and microzooplankton were measured on 26 occasions at 19 stations. Water samples were collected by CTD rosette or individual Go-Flo bottles from various depths across the euphotic zone. Bacterivory and nutrient remineralsation experiments took place at 19 stations, Ammonia regeneration rates were measured in the same experiments on 12 occasions.  
Other biological/fisheries measurement Quantity: number of stations = 31
Description: Bacterial production. 2390 samples taken. Activity of heterotrophic bacteria was determined by the incorporation of titrated thymidine into nucleic acids and the incorporation of titrated leucine into protein.  
Particulate organic matter (inc POC, PON) Quantity: number of stations = 3
Description: Vertical fluxes of sedimentation POC/N. Samples were collected on Stand alone pump filters and Sediment trap material was also collected  
Phytoplankton pigs (eg chlorophyll, fluorescence) Quantity: number of stations = 30
Description: Chlorophyll and Cartenoid pigments. Samples were drawn from all shallow biogeochemistry CTD casts. Other sub samples were taken from pooled water samples used for primary production studies. Further samples for pigment analysis were also drawn from sediment trap material, SAP pump filters and the under-way non-toxic seawater supply. 5 GOM stations, 5 AS stations, 20 A stations  
Phytoplankton pigs (eg chlorophyll, fluorescence) Quantity: number of samples = 107
Description: Pigment samples filtered and extracted for HPLC pigment determination  
Primary productivity Quantity: number of stations = 48
Description: Photosynthesis/Irradiance Experiments. Water samples were collected from the CTD Rosette at the early morning productivity casts and at the Optics casts near midday. Samples for chlorophyll, particulate organic carbon, particulate organic nitrogen and absorption spectra were taken for each experiment  
Primary productivity Quantity: number of stations = 25
Description: Size fractionated primary production. PP measurements carried out using the C-14 technique in order to determine production in the euphotic zone of the study area during the inter monsoon period. The size distribution of the major producers was assessed using size-fractionation. The depth of the euphotic zone was estimated for each station using available light data and water samples were collected from a pre-dawn CTD cats at 10 depths selected to represent % surface incident irradiance. 31 in situ and on deck incubations were carried out including 6 in situ/on deck comparisons. Over 3900 filters were analysed. Size fractionated chlorophyll measurements were carried out fluorometrically following acetone extraction using the same water samples as the primary production determinations. The levels of C-14 DOC produced during the incubations were determined for each depth at the main in situ stations. 5 GOM stations, 2 AS stations, 18 A stations  
Primary productivity Quantity: number of stations = 29
Description: Phytoplankton in the surface waters. Water was collected from the surface 50m of Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea using a rosette of bottles mounted on the CTD, for analysis of nanoplankton (2-20 micrometres) Apatein netting, with a pore size of 20 micrometres was used to collect samples of microplankton (20-200 micrometres) for analysis. Samples were collected from all Arabesque II stations GOM 1-5, AS 1-5 and A 1-9.  
Primary productivity Quantity: number of stations = 16
Description: Phytoplankton New Production and Remote Sensing. Nitrogen assimilation experiments were carried out on 16 occassions at a series of stations spanning a transect from the Gulf of Oman to close to the equator. 2 types of incubations: in situ and on-deck, carried out simultaneously on 8 occasions. Seawater from 6 different depths was collected using a CTD rosette fitted with 10 litre Go-Flo bottles. 4 GOM stations, 10 A stations, and 2 AS stations.  
Seston Quantity: number of profiles = 103
Description: Microzooplankton community structure and function. Water samples were collected from each shallow biogeochemical CTD cast for microzooplankton biomass determination. Phytoplankton samples taken from upper 200 m biogeochemistry CTD casts, underway samples were also collected from the clean water supply. Vertical Apstein net hauls were conducted in the upper 100 m of the water column made for a qualitative assessment of the larger and less delicate microzooplankton species. Fluorescently Labelled Algae Experiment.  
Zooplankton Quantity: number of stations = 5
Description: Microzooplankton grazing dilution experiments were carried out at to depths up to 30 m using the Landry & Hassett (1984) dilution technique. 3 stations were sampled for mesozooplankton biomass.  
Meteorology  
Occasional standard measurements Quantity: number of deployments = 24
Description: UOR towed platform undulating from 5m to 90m carrying temperature, salinity, chlorophyll fluorescence, transmittance, upwelling light and downwelling light (6 wavelengths) sensors.
