ObjectivesThe Ocean Margin Exchange Project (OMEX) was established to address specific problems associated with the understanding of physical, biological, chemical and scientological processes occurring along the NW European shelf break
Phase 2 of the Project (1997-2000) focused on the Iberian Margin. The objective of this cruise was to obtain winter water column and benthic data from the OMEX box off Vigo and the Nazare Canyon, including recovery of the main OMEX trap moorings. Two sections of the Vigo box were surveyed by underway physical and chemical sampling (poor weather). The trap mooring was recovered and a CTD/Core Station worked on the trap site. Extensive benthic and CTD sampling was possible along the southern line of the Vigo box. Three coring/CTD stations were worked in the Nazare Canyon. Additional CTD stations were worked in the Mediterranean outflow. A short bathymetric/seismic profiling section was worked off Faro to provide supporting data for the EU Inlet Dynamics Initiative in the Algarve (INDIA) Project.
