Instrument description
Lockheed Martin Sippican T-5 XBT Probe
The Expendable Bathythermograph system uses a sea water ground. As soon as an electrode within the nose of the expendable probe makes contact with the water, the circuit is complete and temperature or sound velocity data can be telemetered to the ship-board data processing equipment. The T-5 XBT Probe can be used within a maximum depth of 1830 m, with a rated ship speed of 6 knots and has a vertical resolution of 65 cm.
Manufacturer specifications can be found here
RRS James Clark Ross cruise JR20121114 (JR280) XBT data BODC processing
Data Processing
All files were sent in .EDF format, an MK21 export format for this type of probes.
Reformatting
The data were converted to BODC internal format (QXF) using established procedures. The following table shows how the variables within the originator's files were mapped to appropriate BODC parameter codes.
Originator's Parameter Name | Units | BODC Parameter Code | Units |
---|---|---|---|
Depth | m | DEPHCV01 | m |
Temperature | °C | TEMPET01 | °C |
Sound Velocity | m s-1 | SVELCV01 | m s-1 |
Screening was performed on all files and M flags applied to data that was considered anomalous or below the maximum depth for the deployment position.
RRS James Clark Ross cruise JR20121114 (JR280) XBT data originator's processing
Originator's Sampling Protocol
Sampling Strategy
28 XBTs were deployed at the start and end and at three equidistant points along the transect of each acoustic survey. The ship reduced speed to 6 knots to allow for this deployment. The data was exported but no processing was done. Sound velocity was derived with assumed salinity inputed by the originator using a custom BAS script.
Project Information
Polar Science for Planet Earth (PSPE)
Introduction
The PSPE programme is the British Antarctic Survey strategic science framework that extends from April 2009 to March 2013. This programme was created to respond to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) strategy from 2007 to 2012, and contributes to a major environmental research programme, Living with Environmental Change (LWEC), which comprises a 10 year partnership between the UK's main organisations that fund, carry out and use environmental research and observations and will improve the country's tools and knowledge to build resilience, mitigate problems and adapt to environmental change.
The PSPE programme will focus on key questions that can be answered by research requiring access to the polar regions, developing research and long term monitoring and survey programmes in the Antarctic but also pursuing new bi-polar and Arctic research opportunities. The support given to the research programmes includes: investment in training, development of scientific skills and expertise, maintenance of the existing research infrastructures (research stations, ships, aircraft and laboratories), development of new techniques to collect, transfer, curate and visualize data from and relating to the polar regions.
PSPE consists of 6 programmes:
- Climate: atmospheric science and processes, including climate modelling
- Chemistry and past climate: quaternary climate including ice cores, lake, sediments, marine sediments and tropospheric chemistry
- Ecosystems: dynamics of polar ecosystems in response to the impacts of climate and fisheries
- Environmental Change and Evolution: the Earth system; geological to upper atmosphere, complexities and scales of interactions, controls on biological evolution
- Ice sheets: ice sheet evolution and flow, ice sheet changes and sea level rise
- Oceans: role of the polar oceans in controlling and influencing the Earth system

Ecosystems
Introduction
The Ecosystems programme is a BAS core quinquennial research programme, funded by NERC, that started in 2009. It contributes to the NERC's Biodiversity, Climate System and Earth System Science Themes. It addresses the Biodiversity Theme challenges to improve understanding of the role of biodiversity in ecosystem processes, resilience and environmental change; and to enable society to predict and mitigate effects of biodiversity change on processes that sustain life.
This programme will undertake an integrated analyses of the Antarctic ecosystems and aims to develop the understanding of the large-scale operation of Arctic ecosystems and the role of polar ecosystems in the Earth system. A range of experiments (microcosms, incubations and observational studies) will be used to explore how key polar populations respond to change, by examining their flexibility in terms of ecology, physiology, biochemistry and genetics, determining the biological limits of key species under current and future scenarios of temperature, ocean acidification, seasonality and desiccation and comparing the resilience of simple and complex communities. A combination of modelling and technical approaches will allow for the development of means to predict the response key species and populations to environmental change. It will also model how changing key environmental factors, such as food availability, temperature, seasonality, ice cover, among others, can affect species distribution, productivity and biological performance (growth, maturation, reproductive output). Field studies with an integrated approach (e.g. tracking and aerial surveys of predators combined with ship-based surveys of their prey) will be conducted simultaneously and linked to laboratory and long term data studies. Contributing to these studies will be the year-round monitoring of predators at Bird Island, summer sampling of predators at Signy Island, annual sampling of krill and environmental data in a pre-defined area located northeast of South Georgia.
The main objectives are:
- To understand what determines the ability of species to adapt to change through genetic, physiological and ecological processes across a range of marine and terrestrial ecosystems
- To develop quantitative descriptions of the life-cycles of species to determine their likely response to environmental change
- To determine the resilience of polar ecosystems to past and current climate change, in order to predict how they may respond in the future
- To provide data and policy advice, on key species and whole ecosystems, to underpin further development of sustainable fisheries management in the Antarctic and beyond, fulfilling UK obligations under the Antarctic Treaty
- To use regional ecosystem analyses (e.g. of the Scotia Sea and Antarctic Peninsula) to develop models of polar ecosystem dynamics (structure, interactions and biodiversity) which will provide insight into the large-scale operation of bi-polar ecosystems
This programme has links to ICED the EBA programmes, which are part of SCAR and will provide science and policy advice to help shape UK government policy under a number of multinational conservation and management agreements:
- Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM)
- Antarctic Treaty Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP)
- Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine living Resources (CCAMLR)
- Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels
- International Whaling Commission

Western Core Box
The British Antarctic Survey undertakes cruises to determine krill biomass as part of the ongoing assessment of the status of the marine ecosystem in the region of South Georgia. This unique time series, known as the Western Core Box, which has taken place since 1996 is funded by Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) British Antarctic Survey Long Term Monitoring programme.
The survey area is located in an on and off shelf survery area (figure.1), which comprises of an acoustic grid survey of 8 transects each of 80 km in length. Standard data collection includes underway biological echosounder acoustic transaects, CTD profiles, stratified and targetted RMT8 hauls of macrozooplankton and micronekton and a set of moorings which provide temporal coverage and a year round set of observations.
The specific aims of the WCB are:
- To quantify the interannual variability and long-term change in the mesoscale distribution and abundance of Antarctic krill.
- To quantify the the interannual variability and long-term change in the mesoscale distribution and abundance of other plankton/micronekton.
- To examine interannual varaibility in the context of environmental variability (climate variability).
- To examine prey availiability in the context of predator and fishery demand.
