Relative wind speed and direction

M flags were applied to ERWDSS01 where sudden changes in wind direction were considered anomalous.

PAR and TIR

PAR and TIR were screened and M flags were assigned to negative values. These instances might be due to the sensor's reading its own radiation during night periods. No other flags were applied. CSLRR102 exhibit values higher than CSLRR101, including high values during night period, due to this it was decided not to include the channel in the final file, however the data are available upon request.

Air Pressure

M flags were applied to drops in pressure identified during the cruise period.

Air Temperature and Relative Humidity

During screening it was clear that the secondary air temperature and relative humidity channels weren't logging data. These channels will not be included in the final file. Two periods of fairly constant data were identified in CRELZZ01, from 21/04/2008 09:46:00 hours to 21/04/2008 13:51:00 hours and 22/04/2008 02:22:00 hours to 22/04/2008 15:29:00 hours. No flags were applied as the data were not considered anomalous.

Narrative Documents

Gill Windobserver 70 (ultrasonic) anemometer

A solid state, heated ultrasonic anemometer. Designed for use within the aviation industry and for more extreme weather conditions. It measures the times taken for an ultrasonic pulse of sound to travel from the North transducer to the South transducer, and compares it with the time for a pulse to travel from S to N transducer. Likewise times are compared between West and East, and E and W transducer. The wind speed and direction (and the speed of sound) can then be calculated from the differences in the times of flight on each axis. This calculation is independent of factors such as temperature. It uses 150 Watts of electrical heating in the anemometer head to prevent icing. Wind speed accuracy is +/-2% at 12 m/s. Wind direction accuracy is +/-2 degrees at 12 m/s.

Kongsberg Seatex Seapath 200 GPS and Gyrocompass

The Seapath 200 is a highly accurate, real-time heading, attitude and position information system that integrates the best signal characteristics of Inertial Measurement Units (IMU) and Global Positioning System (GPS), using a differential GPS method to acquire this data.

The high-rate motion data is obtained from the Seatex MRU5 inertial sensor and two fixed baseline GPS carrier-phase receivers. The raw data is integrated in a Kalman filter in the Seapath Processing Unit. The IMU contains an accurate linear accelerometer and Bosch Coriolis force angular rate gyros (CFG).

This system is equipped to utilise up to six different DGPS reference stations, it checks for consistency within measurements from the different sensors to ensure reliability and rejects noisy data or reports its inaccuracy. The data is available through various output protocols, RS-232, RS-422 and Ethernet.

This instrument is no longer in production; the main characteristics are presented below, and the specification sheet can be accessed here Kongsberg Seatex Seapath 200 .

Originator's Data Processing

Meteorology data were acquired through different instruments and stored in two separate files. The wind data was stored in the anemometer file and the other meteorological parameters were merged with the surface hydrography data. The data was logged every second to the SCS system and stored in comma separated format in .ACO files, as processed files in tab delimited with a 30 second interval in .LAB and the header information in .TPL files. The .ACO files were used to transfer the data to QXF.

The originator's oceanlogger file had 23 channels, the first four are common to other SCS files, 10 columns relate to meteorological data, the last 8 relate to surface hydrography data and one column is the time stamp when the samples were measured. The four initial columns for all originator's files are: Year (yyyy), Julian day.day fraction (days), Julian day (days), day fraction (days). The meteorological data are: sampletime (YYY DDD HH:MM:SS), airtemp1 (celcius), humidity1 (%RH), par1 (µmol S-1 m2), tir 1 (W m-2), airtemp2 (celsius), humidity2 (%RH), par2 (µmol S-1 m2), tir 2 (W m-2), baro1 (hPa) and baro2 (hPa).

The anemometer file contained the following channels: wind_dir (degrees) and wind_speed (knots).

Unit conversion was applied when originators' units were not equivalent to the units used on the BODC vocabulary dictionary.

BODC Data Processing

Parameter codes defined in BODC's parameter dictionary were assigned to originator's variables. Unit conversions were not necessary as the originator's units were equivalent to the ones on the BODC dictionary. Data were loaded into BODC's database using established data banking procedures.

Western Core Box

The British Antarctic Survey undertakes cruises to determine krill biomass as part of the ongoing assessment of the status of the marine ecosystem in the region of South Georgia. This unique time series, known as the Western Core Box, which has taken place since 1996 is funded by Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) British Antarctic Survey Long Term Monitoring programme.

The survey area is located in an on and off shelf survery area (figure.1), which comprises of an acoustic grid survey of 8 transects each of 80 km in length. Standard data collection includes underway biological echosounder acoustic transaects, CTD profiles, stratified and targetted RMT8 hauls of macrozooplankton and micronekton and a set of moorings which provide temporal coverage and a year round set of observations.

The specific aims of the WCB are:

  • To quantify the interannual variability and long-term change in the mesoscale distribution and abundance of Antarctic krill.
  • To quantify the the interannual variability and long-term change in the mesoscale distribution and abundance of other plankton/micronekton.
  • To examine interannual varaibility in the context of environmental variability (climate variability).
  • To examine prey availiability in the context of predator and fishery demand.
