ObjectivesOne mooring was recovered and one was deployed in the northern Weddell Sea, to extend long-term measurements of the export of Weddell Sea Deep and Bottom Water in the Weddell Gyre by Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO), Columbia University. Six moorings were recovered and seven were deployed in Orkney Passage, to extend long-term time series measuring the export of Weddell Sea Deep Water through Orkney Passage; these moorings are maintained in collaboration between BAS and LDEO, and form part of BAS Long-term Monitoring and Survey project. Additional instruments, and the seventh mooring, were provided as part of the Dynamics of the Orkney Passage Outflow (DynOPO) project between the University of Southampton and BAS. This project is a more detailed process study of Orkney Passage, building on the existing infrastructure in place in this location. The intention is to recover the moorings in early 2017 and revert to the previous set of six more sparsely instrumented moorings at that time.

CTD profiles were obtained at the locations of deployed and recovered moorings and between them. Further casts were made on the western flank of Orkney Passage upstream and downstream of the moorings when the moorings were redeployed.

Part of the WOCE A23 section was repeated for a ninth time since 1995, from the northern Weddell Sea to the shelf break at South Georgia. This also forms part of BAS Long-term Monitoring and Survey project.
