There is evidence to suggest data recorded during the deployment and/or recovery of the instrument are still contained within the record. This is most apparent in the pressure channel where there are sharp decreases in pressure at the beginning (mooring settling) and at the end (starting to rise after release) of the series. InterOcean Spherical Solid State Sensor Current Meter S4 series
The S4 family are selfcontained current measuring sensors enclosing all necessary solid state electronics for acquiring, processing and outputting data. Data retrieval is accomplished through a serial port without opening the instrument.
The spherical shape of the S4 is a contributing factor in the rejection of the vertical components of water movement and there are no protruding parts or sensor support structures to interfere with the water flow.
The S4 measures the magnitude and direction of the horizontal current motion of the water. Water flows through the electromagnetic field created by the instrument, thereby producing a voltage which is proportional to the magnitude of the water velocity past the sensor. This voltage is then sensed by two pairs of titanium electrodes located symmetrically on the equator of the spherical housing which forms the sensor.
Manufacturer's specifications: Meter (sphere, diameter 25cm) is designed for depths down to 1000m (S4 standard: glassfilled cycloaliphalic epoxy construction with grooved surface for hydrodynamic stability) or down to 6000m (S4D, deep: annealed borosilicate glass version with smooth surface). The meter is shackled directly into the mooring cable by means of an axial titanium load bearing shaft.
Meter comprises:

Electromagnetic, 2 axis current speed sensor, range 0 to 350cm/s (standard) 0 to 50 and 0 to 100cm/s (optional), resolution 0.2cm/s (standard) 0.03cm/s (0 to 50 range) 0.06cm/s (0 to 100 range), accuracy 2 per cent reading +/ 1cm/s. The sensor responds to the component of flow normal to its vertical axis.

Fluxgate magnetometer compass for heading information used to reference the current direction to magnetic north, compass range 360°, resolution 0.5°, accuracy 2°, tilt +/ 25° for specified accuracy.

Temperature stable quartz oscillator clock, accuracy 12 minutes/year.

Optional automatic tilt compensation i.e. the allowable tilt of the meter from the vertical at which the vertical cosine response is fully corrected, angle range +/ 45°, resolution 0.6°, accuracy (speed correction) 1 per cent (angle output) 0.25°.

Optional semiconductor (thermistor or platinum) temperature sensor, range 5 to +45 °C, resolution 0.05 °C, accuracy 0.2 °C, response time at 63 per cent 1 min (1.5 sec thermistor or 60msec platinum).

Optional conductive conductivity sensor, range 5 to 70mS/cm, resolution 0.1mS/cm, accuracy 0.2mS/cm (optional inductive sensor, range 1 to 70mS/cm).

Optional semiconductor strain gauge pressure sensor, range 0 to 1000dBar (70M option), resolution 1dBar (4mm with 70M option), accuracy 0.25 per cent fs.

Recorder, CMOS static RAM microprocessor, 64KByte (128K or 256KByte optional) performs vector averaging, burst sampling and adaptive sampling.

S4RT  Basic S4 current meter without memory installed, for realtime monitoring applications only. 
S4  The basic S4 current measuring instrument, with current speed and direction sensors and internal memory from 64K to 1 megabyte of solidstate memory. 
S4DW  S4 current meter directional wave measuring instrument. Includes 1 megabyte of memory, 70 meter highresolution depth, adaptive sampling, and Lithium battery pack, standard. 
S4P  S4 instrument outfitted for profiling applications. Fitted with fast response Platinum temperature sensor, inductive flow through conductivity sensor, and highresolution depth sensor as standard. Memory size may be from 64K to 1 megabyte. 
S4D  Deep water S4 instrument for use to depths of 6,000 meters. 
S4A  Advanced current measuring instrument with large memory capacity, and dualmode logging capability. Memory size may be 32256 megabytes. Includes high speed binary downloads using Zmodem protocol with 32 bit CRC error checking. Adaptive current sampling is standard on this instrument. 
S4ADW  Large memory capacity S4 directional wave measuring instrument. Includes 32 to 256 megabyte memory, 70 meter highresolution depth sensor, and Lithium battery pack, standard. 
S4ADWi  New generation of S4ADW directional wave measuring instrument providing internallyprocessed directional wave data for direct output from the instrument without the need for external analysis software. Ideal multipurpose oceanographic instrument for integratedsystem applications requiring preprocessed output directly into a datalogger, PLC, modem, or other external device without need for PC computer. Used for directional wave, current, and tide measurements, with additional parameters available. Includes longlife lithium battery, and internal memory sizes from 32MB to 256MB. 
S4AP  An S4A instrument outfitted for profiling applications. Fitted with fast response Platinum temperature sensor, inductive flowthrough conductivity sensor, and high resolution depth sensor, standard. Memory size may be 32256 megabytes. 
S4AD  Deep water S4A instrument for use to depths of 6,000 meters. Has all the same features and options as available with the standard S4A. 
S4AH  Same as S4A but uses 5 Hz sampling rate instead of 2 Hz. S4AHDW, S4AHP, S4AHD are 5 Hz models of the units listed above.

RAPIDMOC Current Meter data processing document
This document outlines the procedures undertaken to process and quality assure current meter data collected under the RAPIDMOC project.
Originator's processing
The raw data are downloaded from the instrument and converted to ASCII format. Data recorded during deployment and recovery are removed.
Once in ASCII format the data are corrected for the following 

Duplicate timestamps removed

Magnetic variation  value taken from either the WMM or IGRF models using the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) Geomagnetic calculators. Although this correction varies with time and will be different from the start to the end of the mooring deployment, the rate of change is small and the difference is typically less than the accuracy of the compass in the current meters, so a value from the middle of the deployment period is used.
Calculating and applying calibrations
Manufacturers calibrations are applied.
Quality Control
Automatic spike removal is performed by using a highpass filter to identify and remove filtered values that are more than 10 times the mean of the filtered record.
Data were visually inspected for outlying data and spikes removed. Gaps of less than 24 hours where spikes were removed are linearly interpolated over using data on either side. Missing data after inspection are replaced with 9999.
BODC processing
Data are received after quality checks have been made and calibrations have been applied. The data files are submitted in ASCII format as one file per instrument.
Once the submitted data files are safely archived, the data undergo reformatting and banking procedures:

The data files are transferred into a common format, a NetCDF subset.

Standard parameter codes are assigned that accurately describe the data (see Parameter mapping section below).

Unit conversions are applied, if necessary, so that units are standardised (see Parameter mapping section below).

Data values of 9999 are replaced by the appropriate absent data value.

The data are screened visually and any spikes or instrument malfunctions can be clearly labelled with quality control flags.

Comprehensive documentation is prepared describing the collection, processing and quality of each data series.

Detailed metadata and documents are loaded to the database and linked to each series so that the information is readily available to future users.

Monitoring the Meridional Overturning Circulation at 26.5N (RAPIDMOC)
Scientific Rationale
There is a northward transport of heat throughout the Atlantic, reaching a maximum of 1.3PW (25% of the global heat flux) around 24.5°N. The heat transport is a balance of the northward flux of a warm Gulf Stream, and a southward flux of cooler thermocline and cold North Atlantic Deep Water that is known as the meridional overturning circulation (MOC). As a consequence of the MOC northwest Europe enjoys a mild climate for its latitude: however abrupt rearrangement of the Atlantic Circulation has been shown in climate models and in palaeoclimate records to be responsible for a cooling of European climate of between 510°C. A principal objective of the RAPID programme is the development of a preoperational prototype system that will continuously observe the strength and structure of the MOC. An initiative has been formed to fulfill this objective and consists of three interlinked projects:
 A mooring array spanning the Atlantic at 26.5°N to measure the southward branch of the MOC (Hirschi et al., 2003 and Baehr et al., 2004).
 Additional moorings deployed in the western boundary along 26.5°N (by Prof. Bill Johns, University of Miami  project MOCHA) to resolve transport in the Deep Western Boundary Current (Bryden et al., 2005). These moorings allow surfacetobottom density profiles along the western boundary, MidAtlantic Ridge, and eastern boundary to be observed. As a result, the transatlantic pressure gradient can be continuously measured.
 Monitoring of the northward branch of the MOC using submarine telephone cables in the Florida Straits (Baringer et al., 2001) led by Dr Molly Baringer (NOAA/AOML/PHOD)  Western Boundary Time Series (WBTS) project.
The UKled monitoring array system was recovered and redeployed annually until 2008 under RAPID funding. From 2008 until 2015 the array continued to be serviced annually under RAPIDWATCH funding. From 2015 until 2021 the array was serviced under RAPIDAMOC funding. Since 2022 the servicing of the array has continued to be funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). The USled projects are funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) (MOCHA project) and NOAA Office of Climate Observations (WBTS project).
The array will be focussed on three regions, the Eastern Boundary (EB), the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) and the Western Boundary (WB). The geographical extent of these regions are as follows:
 Eastern Boundary (EB) array defined as a box with the southeast corner at 23.5°N, 25.5°W and the northwest corner at 29.0°N, 12.0°W
 Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) array defined as a box with the southeast corner at 23.0°N, 52.1°W and the northwest corner at 26.5°N, 40.0°W

RAPID Climate Change  Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (RAPIDAMOC)
RAPIDAMOC is an £8.4 million, 7 year (20132020) research programme that builds on the success of the Natural Environment Research Council's (NERC) RAPID and RAPIDWATCH programmes and will deliver a 16 year long time series of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).
Background
The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a critical element in the energy balance of the global climate system. The AMOC consists of a nearsurface, warm northward flow of ocean water, compensated by a colder southward return flow at depth. This heat is transferred from the ocean to the atmosphere at midlatitudes, with a substantial impact on climate and, in particular, on that of the UK and northwest Europe.
Observing and understanding changes in the AMOC is critically important for identifying the mechanisms of decadal climate variability and change, and for interannualtodecadal climate prediction. This includes predicting changes in the location, frequency and intensity of Atlantic hurricanes, storms in the North Atlantic and over Europe, shifts in tropical and European precipitation patterns, and the response of sea level to changing radiative forcing. Sustained observations are also critical for assessing the possibility of abrupt change in the AMOC that are known to occur in palaeoclimatic records.
Since 2004 the NERC RAPID and RAPIDWATCH programmes, in partnership with the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the US, have supported an observing system to continuously measure the AMOC at 26.5°N via a transbasin array of moored instruments. This measures the basinwide strength and vertical structure of the AMOC, and its components.
Observations from the array have already revolutionised understanding of AMOC variability and documented its variability on seasonal to interannual timescales. The first few years of observations, demonstrated the feasibility of AMOC measurement, provided new insights into the seasonal cycle, and allowed apparent trends in previous historical 'snapshots' to be seen in the context of natural variability. RAPIDAMOC will extend the AMOC time series.
Objective
RAPIDAMOC's overall objective is to determine the variability of the AMOC, and its links to climate and to the ocean carbon sink, on interannualtodecadal time scales
This will be achieved by the continued support of the monitoring array and supporting the use of the data in three key areas:
 Application of array data for improved ocean state estimation;
 Use of array data to understand the role of the AMOC in climate variability and predictability;
 Addition of biogeochemical sensors to the array and use to constrain biogeochemical fluxes.

RAPIDMOC MidAtlantic Ridge (MAR) Array
The MidAtlantic Ridge Array defines a box in which moorings were deployed either side of the MidAtlantic Ridge in the North Atlantic as part of the RAPIDMOC project. The box region has latitudinal limits of 23° N to 26.5° N and longitudinal limits of 40° W to 52.1° W. Moorings occupied this region between 2004 and 2020, and were typically deployed for 12 to 18 months.
