ObjectivesThe was the first in a series of cruises funded by NERCs Changing Arctic Ocean Programme that aims to better understand the impact of climate change (sea ice retreat, warming air temperatures, changing circulation patterns) on Arctic Ecosystems.

A suite of physical, biological and chemical measurements were made throughout the water column and at the sea floor to describe and quantify the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nutrients within the sediment and water column, primary productivity, phytoplankton, zooplankton and microbial community structure, benthic community structure, diversity and function.

43 stations were visited across the Barents Sea that spanned a wide range of different dynamical regimes, from the Norwegian coastal current and warm, Atlantic inflow in the south, across the Polar Front and the shelf-break region north of Svalbard.
