PAP Mooring Data Quality Report

This is a data quality report for the 7th deployment of PAP (Porcupine Abyssal Plain) Observatory mooring number 1, referred to as PAP1_062007 throughout BODC tables and documents.

This mooring came adrift shortly after deployment (the data originator's history of events is given below) with the result that all data recorded by some microcats after 12th July 2007, and by all microcats after 15th July 2007 should be treated as suspect.

30th July 2007
The inductive data link connecting the sensors to the satelite transmission system has been deteriorating for some days and data is now only being received sporadically.

9th August 2007
The mooring has moved off station and appears to be drifting at about 1km/hr. The sensor package at 30m is still attached to the surface mooring.

5th September 2007
It has just been reported that the adrift part of the PAP observatory, with all sensors down to 1000m, had been successfully recovered by the research ship Pelagia. Many thanks to the science team and deck crew for their efforts. The recovered parts will be examined to determine the cause of the failure.

Sea-Bird SBE37-IM MicroCAT

The SBE 37-IM MicroCAT is a high accuracy conductivity and temperature recorder (pressure optional) with a built in Inductive Modem, which provides reliable, low-cost, real-time data transmission. Designed for moorings and other long-duration, fixed-site deployments, MicroCATs have non-corroding titanium housings rated for operation to 7000 metres or pressure sensor full scale-range.

Communication with the MicroCAT is via a Surface Inductive Modem (SIM) to a computer or data logger. Commands and data are transmitted half-duplex between the SIM and the MicroCAT using DPSK (differential-phase-shift-keyed) telemetry. As a safe guard, the MicroCAT simultaneously backs up the data in its non-volatile internal memory as well as transmitting the data via telemetry.

The MicroCAT's aged and pressure-protected thermistor has a long history of exceptional accuracy and stability (typical drift is less than 0.002 °C per year). Electrical isolation of the conductivity electronics eliminates any possibility of ground-loop noise.

Project Information

Oceans 2025 Theme 10, Sustained Observation Activity 2: Porcupine Abyssal Plain Ocean Observatory

The NERC Delivery Plan (2005) gives priority to developing ocean observing systems to detect climate change and its impact on ecosystems. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by fixed point time-series eulerian observatories equipped with a diverse array of physical, biological and biogeochemical sensors. The Porcupine Abyssal Plain (PAP) observatory, involving high frequency measurements of both water column and seafloor processes, is the only UK open ocean observatory which meets these criteria. The PAP site has been monitored through a variety of projects since 1989. The National Oceanogaphy Centre, Southampton (NOCS) will manage all monitoring activities at the PAP site for Oceans 2025. Spatial context to Sustained Observation Activity (SO) 2 will be provided by the Atlantic Meridional Transects (AMT) in SO 1 and by a Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) route (SO 15) which pass nearby.

Moored Instrument Rig PAP1_062007

This rig was deployed as part of the Porcupine Abyssal Plain (PAP) observatory project. 'PAP1_062007' refers to the deployment of mooring number 1 in June 2007 ('062007') located at the PAP Observatory. This was the seventh deployment of this mooring configuration at the PAP site, under this project.

Instrumentation

The mooring design is an 'S' tether configuration allowing the mooring to better withstand the extremes of the environment it is in. The main surface buoy is a Toroid type buoy, and below this buoy are 30 meters of chain with a conducting cable running along side. The chain is there to take the loads that the mooring will experience and the cable is a vehicle for the data. Attached to the bottom of the chain is the instrument frame, within which are five different instruments, and coming out of the bottom of the frame is a 10mm jacketed wire, 1000 meters long. Along the wire, at pre-determined points, there are eleven SBE 37 CTDs, all of which have built in modems allowing their data to be part of the telemetry system.

Porcupine Abyssal Plain (PAP) Observatory

The Porcupine Abyssal Plain (PAP) observatory is a site at which moorings were deployed in the Northeastern Atlantic, as part of the ANIMATE (Atlantic Network of Interdisciplinary Moorings and Time-series for Europe), MERSEA (Marine Environment and Security for the European Area) and then EuroSITES projects. The PAP site is centred at latitude 49° N and longitude 16.5° W. Moorings have occupied this region since 2002 and are typically deployed for 12 months.
