WETLabs ECO-FLNTU(SB) combined fluorometer and turbidity sensor
A combined fluorometer and turbidity sensor with an internal battery power supply. The instrument is designed to be used for autonomous operation. The (SB) designation signifies that this sensor is fitted with internal batteries for autonomous operation. Measures chlorophyll fluorescence at 470 nm and turbidity at 700 nm within the same volume. Chlorophyll is excited by the presence of an external light source, this excitement is detected as Chlorophyll-a fluorescence by a detector for a given sample volume of water. Turbidity is measured simultaneously by detecting the scattered light from an external light source. Key characteristics are two light sources: (1) two bright blue LEDs centred at 455 nm and modulated at 1 kHz (to excite Chlorophyll-a) and (2) one 700 nm LED (to scatter from particulate matter). Detectors for fluorescence and turbidity are positioned at a 140 degree angle to the light sources. The instrument is stable over a temperature range of 0 - 20 degC and is rated to a depth of 300 m as standard. The fluorometer can typically measure phytoplankton concentrations in the range 0.01-50 ug/l, with a sensitivity of 0.01 ug/l, at wavelengths of 470 (excitation) or 695 (emission) nm. The turbidity sensor can measure within the range 0.01-25 NTU, with a sensitivity of 0.01 NTU, at a wavelength of 700 nm.

JC165 PAP1 moored Combination Fluorometer and Turbidity Sensor data: BODC Processing
The data were supplied to BODC in a single .CSV file and were converted to BODC internal NetCDF format using standard BODC processing procedures. The variables provided in the .CSV file were mapped to BODC parameter codes as follows:

The reformatted data were visualised using the in-house EDSERPLO software. Suspect data were marked by adding an appropriate quality control flag, missing data by both setting the data to an appropriate value and setting the quality control flag.
JC165 PAP1 moored Combination Fluorometer and Turbidity Sensor data: Originator Processing
Sampling Strategy
The PAP1 mooring was deployed at 48.9656°N 16.36905°W on the 4th of June 2018 during RRS James Cook cruise JC165 and recovered by RRS Discovery cruise DY103 on the 25 th June 2019. The Wetlabs ECO-FLNTUSB was housed in a metal frame at 30 m depth. The fluorometer was set up to measure a packet of 8 measurements every four hours and measure backscattering at 700nm wavelength and chlorophyll fluorescence at 455 and 685nm.
Calibrations
The WETLabs ECO-FLNTUSB was bench tested prior to deployment and was further calibrated by deployment on CTD 3. On recovery, the factory calibrations were applied, and the instrument was then calibrated against the CTD fluorometer (Chelsea Aqua Tracker III) which had been calibrated by bottle samples run on a Turner Trilogy bench top fluorometer. The calibration used was obtained prior to deployment to avoid complications from biofouling on recovery.

Marine LTSS: CLASS (Climate Linked Atlantic Sector Science)
Introduction
CLASS is a five year (2018 to 2023) programme, funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and extended until March 2024.
Scientific Rationale
The ocean plays a vital role in sustaining life on planet Earth, providing us with both living resources and climate regulation. The trajectory of anthropogenically driven climate change will be substantially controlled by the ocean due to its absorption of excess heat and carbon from the atmosphere, with consequent impacts on ocean resources that remain poorly understood. In an era of rapid planetary change, expanding global population and intense resource exploitation, it is vital that there are internationally coordinated ocean observing and prediction systems so policy makers can make sound evidence-based decisions about how to manage our interaction with the ocean. CLASS will underpin the UK contribution to these systems, documenting and understanding change in the marine environment, evaluating the impact of climate change and effectiveness of conservation measures and predicting the future evolution of marine environments. Over the five-year period CLASS will enhance the cost-effectiveness of observing systems by migrating them towards cutting edge autonomous technologies and developing new sensors. Finally, CLASS will create effective engagement activities ensuring academic partners have transparent access to NERC marine science capability through graduate training partnerships and access to shipborne, lab based and autonomous facilities, and modelling capabilities.

Instrumentation
The mooring design is an 'S' tether configuration allowing the mooring to better withstand the extremes of the environment it is in. The main surface buoy is an ODAS (Ocean Data Acquisition System) buoy, and below this buoy are 30 metres of chain with a conducting cable running along side. The chain is there to take the loads that the mooring will experience and the cable is a vehicle for the data. Attached to the bottom of the chain is the instrument frame, and coming out of the bottom of the frame is a cable attached to a subsurface buoy, an acoustic release and then finally a 3 tonne sinker weight. Porcupine Abyssal Plain (PAP) Observatory
The Porcupine Abyssal Plain (PAP) observatory is a site at which moorings were deployed in the Northeastern Atlantic, as part of the ANIMATE (Atlantic Network of Interdisciplinary Moorings and Time-series for Europe), MERSEA (Marine Environment and Security for the European Area), EuroSITES, Oceans2025, Fix03 and CLASS projects. The PAP site is centred at latitude 49° N and longitude 16.5° W. Moorings have occupied this region since 2002 and are typically deployed for 12 months.
Please note: Near Real Time data is only stored at BODC where delayed mode data were not recovered. All near real time data can be found at the OceanSites GDA and through IFREMER.
