JC231 atmospheric multispectral radiometer data quality report
Screening and Quality Control
During BODC quality control, data were screened using in house visualisation software and any obvious outliers and spikes were looked at in closer detail and flagged if necessary. All seven channels are synchronous in the rise and fall in light intensity during recording at 1 Hz for 90 seconds with 30 minute intervals.
RXSD412E RXSD443E RXSD490E RXSD510E RXSD555E RXSD670E RXSD683E
Every day there are a few (ca. 20) data points in each channel (almost always at the exact same time stamp for each channel) that are lower than expected and out-of-step with their adjacent data points. These lower data points often read at, or slightly above, zero.
As the data point anomaly is always negative, these points will decrease a mean average (although unlikely affect a median or mode because their number is few compared to expected values).
Individual points were not flagged as this signal drop issue is a half-hourly occurrence and across the entire year long data recording period.

Satlantic OCR 500 series Multispectral Radiometer
The OCR-507 Multispectral Radiometer is a member of Satlantic's line of micro-sensor instruments. The OCR-507 is a complete stand-alone, fully digital optical sensor package capable of generating spectral records of light collected in an ocean environment. The instrument comprises data logging and processing software and is available in two configurations, radiance and irradiance for in-water and in-air applications. The instrument can also be configured as a coupled irradiance and radiance radiometer. Up to seven customer defined discrete optical wavelengths can be utilized with the OCR-507, including standard wavelengths of 400 to 865 nm, or UV wavelengths of 305, 325, 340 and 380 nm.
Two standard, non-isolated, telemetry (data) interfaces are provided with the instrument, each using a different transmission medium. The RS-232 interface provides transmit and receive capabilities whilst the RS-422 interface is for transmittance only. A non-isolated RS-485 interface is also provided for operating the instrument if used in a SatNet networked environment as part of a larger system.
The OCR-507 combines a fully characterized cosine response with custom low fluorescence filters and a sampling rate of 7 to 24 Hz. The instrument is also compatible with Bioshutter anti-biofouling solution.

Processing by BODC of PAP1 moored Satlantic OCR-507 ICSA: JC231
The atmospheric downwelling irradiance data were supplied to BODC in a single .CSV file and were converted to the BODC internal NetCDF format using standard BODC processing procedures. The variables provided in the .CSV file were mapped to BODC parameter codes as follows:
Originator's variable | Units | BODC Code | Units | Comments |
---|---|---|---|---|
Chan1 (412 nm) | µW/cm2/nm | RXSD412E | W/m2/nm | Unit conversion of *0.01 applied |

Chan7 (683 nm) | µW/cm2/nm | RXSD683E | W/m2/nm | Unit conversion of *0.01 applied |
The reformatted data were visualised using the in-house EDSERPLO software. Suspect data were marked by adding an appropriate quality control flag, missing data by both setting the data to an appropriate value and setting the quality control flag.
Processing by originator of PAP1 Satlantic OCR-507 ICSA deployed on cruise JC231
Sampling strategy
A Satlantic OCR-507 ICSA (S/N: 201) was mounted on top of the buoy mast at 4 metres to record atmospheric downwelling irradiance. The sensor was controlled by a telemetry unit, and was set to sample at 1 Hz for 90 seconds every 30 minutes at 17 and 47 past the hour.
The mooring was deployed at 48.9697°N 8.2783°W on 07 May 2022 during RRS James Cook JC231 cruise and was recovered on 11 May 2023 during RRS JC247
Data Acquisition and Initial Processing
Data were acquired from the sensor via the telemetry hub, therefore data are near real time (NRT). No calibrations nor corrections were applied to correct for any drift.

Project Information
Marine LTSS: CLASS (Climate Linked Atlantic Sector Science)
Introduction
CLASS is a five year (2018 to 2023) programme, funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and extended until March 2024.
Scientific Rationale
The ocean plays a vital role in sustaining life on planet Earth, providing us with both living resources and climate regulation. The trajectory of anthropogenically driven climate change will be substantially controlled by the ocean due to its absorption of excess heat and carbon from the atmosphere, with consequent impacts on ocean resources that remain poorly understood. In an era of rapid planetary change, expanding global population and intense resource exploitation, it is vital that there are internationally coordinated ocean observing and prediction systems so policy makers can make sound evidence-based decisions about how to manage our interaction with the ocean. CLASS will underpin the UK contribution to these systems, documenting and understanding change in the marine environment, evaluating the impact of climate change and effectiveness of conservation measures and predicting the future evolution of marine environments. Over the five-year period CLASS will enhance the cost-effectiveness of observing systems by migrating them towards cutting edge autonomous technologies and developing new sensors. Finally, CLASS will create effective engagement activities ensuring academic partners have transparent access to NERC marine science capability through graduate training partnerships and access to shipborne, lab based and autonomous facilities, and modelling capabilities.
