Data Quality Report of PAP1 Mooring Pro-Oceanus CO2-Pro and Pro-Oceanus CO2-Pro Atmospheric data: DY116

The CO2-Pro 34-200-45 sensor failed to record on the following dates:

  • 12th of January 2021 at 08:58.
  • 18th of January 2021 at 08:58.
  • From 22nd of January 2021 at 20:58 to 23rd of January 2021 at 13:58 (exclusive; which was not one of the preprogrammed times).
  • From the 23rd of January 2021 at 13:58 the instrument started recording the 10 measurements every hour (instead of every 6 hours) until it finally stopped recording altogether at 18:58.


    The CO2-Pro Atmospheric 35-599-50A sensor recorded two samples, at different times, within the same second on two occasions:

  • 26th of November 2020 at 23:28:54.
  • 5th of January 2021 at 23:28:59.
  • The time channel has been flagged for each duplicate time stamp, however the time is not wrong just inaccurate as the time channel does not have millisecond precision.

    The instrument also stopped recording on the 8th of January 2021, 3 months before recovery.

    Narrative Documents

    Pro Oceanus CO2-Pro Submersible pCO2 Sensor

    An in-situ dissolved gas sensor measuring the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) gas dissolved in water using infrared detection. An internal zeroing feature provides a stable long-term baseline for ensuring accurate and stable measurements. The CO2-Pro can also be modified to measure both water and air pCO2. Standard ranges from 0-600 ppm to 0-2000 ppm.

    Processing by BODC of PAP1 Mooring Pro-Oceanus CO2-Pro and Pro-Oceanus CO2-Pro Atmospheric data: DY116

    The PAP1 mooring was deployed on 21st November 2020 on the RRS Discovery cruise DY116 and was recovered on the RRS Discovery Cruise DY130 on 1st of April 2021. The measurements made by the two Pro-Oceanus instruments were supplied to BODC in .csv (ASCII) files. The data were then loaded into BODC's database using established BODC data banking procedures.     The originator variables were mapped to appropriate BODC parameter codes as follows:

    The reformatted data were visualised using in-house EDSERPLO software. Any suspect data were flagged using the BODC quality control flags.

    Processing by Originator of PAP1 Mooring Pro-Oceanus CO2-Pro and Pro-Oceanus CO2-Pro Atmospheric data: DY116

    The following information was taken from the DY116 and DY130 cruise reports and originator's files. For more detailed information please refer to the DY116 and DY130 cruise reports.

    The CO2-Pro Atmospheric 39-599-50A sensor was configured to take 10 measurements at each of the following times: 5:27:00, 11:27:00, 17:27:00, and 23:27:00. This instrument alternates between measuring the partial pressure of CO2 in surface water and in air in order to accurately determine the CO2 flux. Due to unknown circumstances this sensor stopped recording on the 8th of January 2021.

    The CO2-Pro 34-200-45 sensor was configured to take 10 measurements at each of the following times: 02:58:00, 08:58:00, 14:58:00, and 20:58:00. Due to unknown circumstances this sensor stopped recording on the 23rd of January 2021.

    The instruments were set to power up 20 minutes before taking measurements in order to make sure the sensors had warmed up before sampling. The sensors only received energy from the telemetry unit.

    The instruments have been calibrated by the manufacturer but the data have not been corrected using bottle samples.


    Project Information

    Marine LTSS: CLASS (Climate Linked Atlantic Sector Science)

    Introduction

    CLASS is a five year (2018 to 2023) programme, funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and extended until March 2024.

    Scientific Rationale

    The ocean plays a vital role in sustaining life on planet Earth, providing us with both living resources and climate regulation. The trajectory of anthropogenically driven climate change will be substantially controlled by the ocean due to its absorption of excess heat and carbon from the atmosphere, with consequent impacts on ocean resources that remain poorly understood. In an era of rapid planetary change, expanding global population and intense resource exploitation, it is vital that there are internationally coordinated ocean observing and prediction systems so policy makers can make sound evidence-based decisions about how to manage our interaction with the ocean. CLASS will underpin the UK contribution to these systems, documenting and understanding change in the marine environment, evaluating the impact of climate change and effectiveness of conservation measures and predicting the future evolution of marine environments. Over the five-year period CLASS will enhance the cost-effectiveness of observing systems by migrating them towards cutting edge autonomous technologies and developing new sensors. Finally, CLASS will create effective engagement activities ensuring academic partners have transparent access to NERC marine science capability through graduate training partnerships and access to shipborne, lab based and autonomous facilities, and modelling capabilities.

    This rig was deployed as part of the Porcupine Abyssal Plain (PAP) observatory project. 'PAP1_112020' refers to the deployment of mooring number 1 in November 2020 ('112020') located at the PAP Observatory.

    Instrumentation

    The Discovery Cruise DY116 deployed for the first time a Mobilis buoy. The new Mobilis buoy was deployed without a sensor frame. All instruments, except Star Oddi sensors, were deployed attached directly to the buoy. Using cable ties and gaffer tape, Star Oddi sensors were attached at various depths to the rope leading to the anchor. Further details on pages 27, 28, and 56-60 of the deployment cruise report.

    Porcupine Abyssal Plain (PAP) Observatory

    The Porcupine Abyssal Plain (PAP) observatory is a site at which moorings were deployed in the Northeastern Atlantic, as part of the ANIMATE (Atlantic Network of Interdisciplinary Moorings and Time-series for Europe), MERSEA (Marine Environment and Security for the European Area), EuroSITES, Oceans2025, Fix03 and CLASS projects. The PAP site is centred at latitude 49° N and longitude 16.5° W. Moorings have occupied this region since 2002 and are typically deployed for 12 months.

    Please note: Near Real Time data is only stored at BODC where delayed mode data were not recovered. All near real time data can be found at the OceanSites GDA and through IFREMER.
