RBR TDR-2050 Submersible Temperature and Depth Recorder

The RBR (Ltd) TDR-2050 is a small (235mm x 38mm OD), self-contained, submersible temperature and depth recorder (sensors and data logger). It can be deployed for a period of up to three years and can collect more than 1,200,000 sets of samples. Data can be retained in memory for 20 years (even without batteries).

The TDR-2050 is available in two casings, plastic and titanium. The depth rating of the plastic case is 740m, the titanium 6,600m (limited by the pressure transducer). The temperature channel of the TDR-2050 is calibrated to an accuracy of ± 0.002°C (ITS-90) over the range -5 to +35°C. Extended range calibrations are available. Typical drift has been measured to be 0.002°C/year. The thermistor may be external (<3 sec time constant) or internal (<20 sec time constant). A fast thermistor probe (0.095 sec) is also available. The depth channel is calibrated to an accuracy of 0.05 dbar.

BODC Processing

The data arrived at BODC in Matlab binary .MAT files representing data collected by a temperature depth recorder from a mooring positioned in Marguerite Bay, Antarctica which was deployed in conjuction with the Rothera Oceanographic and Biological Time Series (RaTS). These were reformatted to the internal QXF format using BODC transfer function 390. The following table shows how the variables within the matlab files were mapped to appropriate BODC parameter codes:

The reformatted data were visualised using the in-house EDSERPLO software. Suspect data were marked by adding an appropriate quality control flag, missing data by both setting the data to an appropriate value and setting the quality control flag.

External Data Processing

The RaTS moored TDR data were subjected to a number of checks and calibrations externally, prior to be being received by BODC

Pressure data were calibrated against deck pressure data from the TDR plus depth data derived from ADCP (on the same mooring) deck pressures. See table 1 for further details.

Temperature data from moored TDR were compared to the temperature data collected from the weekly CTD cast made at the RaTS site. The TDR corressponded well with the RaTS CTD casts where a small correction (<0.05 o C) was made to of the time averaged moored data. See table 1 for further details.

Project Information

Rothera Oceanographic and Biological Time Series (RaTS)

The RaTS programme, which has been run by the British Antarctic Survey since 1997, involves the long-term monitoring of the nearshore marine environment. The project has always been funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC); it initially was a discrete project within the BAS marine biological programme but has now been moved to form a component of the BAS Long Term Monitoring and Survey (LTMS) programme.

Scientific Aims

The RaTS programme was started with two broad aims. The first was to provide a suite of oceanographic data that would provide the environmental background to aid interpretation of the nearshore marine ecology. The second was to test a series of broad hypotheses concerned with surface and deep water coupling and environmental forcing of the nearshore oceanic environment. The key questions formulated at the start of the programme were:

1. To what extent is the physics of the upper water column (ice dynamics, thermal characteristics and vertical structure) related to large-scale forcing such as the El-Niño Southern Oscillation?

2. How and to what extent is variability in the physics of the upper water column transferred to biological processes, particularly primary production?

3. How and to what extent does variability in the timing and in the intensity of the summer phytoplankton bloom affect key ecological processes in the benthos, and particularly feeding, growth and reproduction?

To answer these questions an integrated programme of regular oceanographic and biological measurements was implemented. Observations are taken at a fixed station, selected to be safely accessible by boat in summer and snowmobile in winter whilst being well away from normal ship traffic. Operations at this site included regular CTD casts, discrete water sampling and the deployment of three moorings equipped with current profilers and other hydrography sensors.

RaTS Mooring Deployment 1

The first deployment of the mooring at the RaTS site occurred on 25th January 2005 and was later recovered on 15th February 2006. Prior to deployment, all sensors were programmed to sample for a duration of a year. However, due to a delay in the recovery, all sensors except for the ADCP have a data gap of ~3 weeks. Both deployment and recovery were carried out onboard the RRS James Clark Ross.

Fixed Station Document

The RaTS site is located in Marguerite Bay, ~4 km from shore and over a water depth of ~520 m. Marguerite Bay is enclosed by Adelaide Island to the north, Alexander Island to the south and the Antarctic Peninsula to the east (Figure 1 and 2). Waters are strongly influenced by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Surface waters during summer become warm through insolation and freshened by ice melt. In winter surface waters are generally colder and more saline and characterised by a thick mixed layer which persists into the summer months and is marked by a subsurface temperature minimum (for fuller details please see Meredith et al., 2004 and references therein). When optimal conditions aren't available a secondary site is occupied. In times when fast ice prevented sampling at both the primary and secondary site, a third site is utilised close to the Rothera Research Station. However, only a water sample is collected during this time as the water is too shallow to allow for a cast to be conducted. The following provides details of the sites sampled:

To compliment the CTD data collected at the RaTS site, three fixed moorings were deployed between 2005 - 2007. The moorings consisted of a suite of sensors including ADCPs, CTDs and sediment traps.

Drake Passage

The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE, 1990-1998) was a major international experiment which made measurements and undertook modelling studies of the deep oceans in order to provide a much improved understanding of the role of ocean circulation in changing and ameliorating the Earth's climate.

The Drake Passage is the narrowest constriction of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) - the largest current in the world and connects all three major oceanic basins both horizontally and vertically, thus being a key control in the global overturning circulation.Within the Drake Passage, two repeat hydrographic sections (SR1 and SR1b) were established by WOCE. These were designed to extend measurements collected earlier by the International Southern Ocean Studies (ISOS) programme and have continued beyond the WOCE time-frame.

The original section was SR1 (which also covers part of the A21 one time survey track). Subsequently, the section was shifted to the east (and designated SR1b) in order for it to lie on a satellite ground track as illustrated in the image below.

In addition to the hydrographic measurements, UK research in Drake Passage also includes a network of coastal and deep tide gauges, analysis of satellite altimeter data, and state-of-the-art global numerical modeling.
